What are SMC indicators?
By FXTrading4U Editorial Team · Updated 2026-10-30 · 5 min read
SMC indicators are charting tools that automate smart money concepts: swing structure, break of structure, change of character, order blocks and fair value gaps. They draw levels using fixed rules. They do not predict price and do not place trades.
The main concepts
- Break of structure (BOS): price closes beyond the last swing high or low in the direction of the trend.
- Change of character (CHoCH): the first break against the prevailing trend.
- Order block: the last opposing candle before a strong move, treated as a possible reaction area.
- Fair value gap (FVG): a three-candle pattern that leaves a price gap between the first and third candles.
What an indicator can and cannot do
An indicator draws these items the same way every time, which saves time and removes some subjectivity. It cannot tell you which level will hold. Treat zones as areas to watch and combine them with your own stop loss and risk limits.
Using them without overloading the chart
Show only the last few structures and only on one or two timeframes. Too many zones make a chart harder to read.
Frequently asked questions
Are SMC concepts proven to work?
They are a way of describing price action. There is no guarantee any pattern is profitable. Test on a demo account and keep a journal.
Does the indicator repaint?
Structure points are confirmed after a swing completes, so they appear with a delay. Read the product guide for how confirmation works.
